Khairy : Don't Sulk If Not Nominated As Candidates

KOTA BAHARU, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- Umno leaders in Kelantan should not sulk if they have been dropped as candidates for the March 8 general election, Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin said today.

Instead, he said, they should soldier on to help the Barisan Nasional (BN) recapture the state from PAS.

"There is a tendency for some people to sulk when they are not nominated and this is when the "chah keting" (a Kelantanese phrase which means killing the political career of another person, usually from the same party) happens.

"This has happened in Kelantan before and if it happens again, it will render our efforts to wrest Kelantan difficult," he told reporters after opening the Kota Baharu Umno Youth operations room.

On Umno candidates in Kelantan, Khairy, who is tipped to contest in the Rembau parliamentary seat, said some Umno Youth members were in the list.

He thanked State Umno liaison chief Datuk Seri Annuar Musa for his confidence in the movement.

Khairy Suggests Winding Up CTOS

REMBAU, July 14 (Bernama) -- Deputy Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said today he hoped that the government would just wind up Credit Tip-Off Service Sdn Bhd (CTOS).

He said the government should find a solution through Bank Negara because the service of selling credit data could be exploited by the private sector in the name of profit.

"Otherwise, many people will be victimised, especially Malays who may have settled their debts but get penalised by the information provided by CTOS," he told reporters after the opening of the Rembau Umno Youth delegates meeting here.

The meeting was opened by Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who is also the state Umno liaison chief.

Khairy said he noticed that most of the people on the CTOS blacklist were Malays.

He also said that CTOS had abused all procedures and regulations and hoped that the system could be amended to ensure transparency and fairness.

The service of selling information, like what CTOS does, should be carried out by the government, he said.

Consider New Faces For Polls - Khairy Says

(BERNAMA) The younger generation should be given a chance to contest in the next general election, UMNO Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin said.

"In line with our effort to introduce more new faces, I hope that these people would be considered as possible candidates. But it's up to the party leadership to choose the candidates," he told reporters after the opening of Rasah UMNO Youth and Wanita division delegates conferences here Sunday night.

Khairy was hopeful that the trend of fielding new faces, like what was seen in the 2004 polls, would continue.

He said this was necessary because in politics, continuous efforts were needed to rejuvenate the party and government.

"New faces can come not only from Umno Youth but also Wanita and Puteri Umno. And they can also include those who're already around and prepared (to shoulder greater responsibility)," he said.

(BERNAMA) All members of Umno Youth were on Saturday asked to safeguard the power-sharing concept of the Barisan Nasional (BN), a legacy of Malaysia's second Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.

Umno Youth Deputy Chief Khairy Jamaluddin, in summing up the Seminar of the Legacy of Tun Abdul Razak here, said the power-sharing concept had forged unity of the country's leadership of the past up to the present.

It was one aspect of Tun Razak's legacy that has been maintained, he added.

Tun Razak had formed the BN in 1973 to overcome the shortcomings of the Alliance formula in the 1969 general election that led to the racial riots of May 13 of that year.

In the 1974 general election, Tun Razak as the Prime Minister led the BN to a massive victory, taking 135 of the 154 seats contested. PAS was also a component party of the BN then.

Umno Youth Secretary Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, in summing up the legacy of Tun Razak in government and society, said the power-sharing concept had stabilised the country and led to the formulation of the New Economic Policy (NEP) and the Rukun Negara.

The NEP, which was introduced in 1970, was Tun Razak's biggest contribution to the nation in restructuring society and distributing wealth to Bumiputeras and non-Bumiputeras as well as eradicating poverty.

The two-day seminar, organised by the Akademi Pemuda chaired by Khairy and the Tun Razak Foundation Alumni Association, resolved that the spirit of the NEP should continue to be instilled in the people to ensure national prosperity.

It resolved that the establishment of government agencies, among them the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), was also a major contribution of Tun Razak towards restructuring of the socio-economic position of the people.

DAP Will Harp On Gerakan-PPP Spat To Drum Up Support - Khairy

REMBAU, March 24 (Bernama) -- The DAP will try to blow up the Gerakan-PPP spat to garner support in the run-up to the April 12 Machap by-election in Melaka, Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin said today.

He said the minor tiff between the two Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties had since been settled.

"At BN Youth level, there's no problem," he told reporters when met at the Rembau district-level Farmers' Day celebrations at Kampung Titian Akar.

Khairy said the DAP would try to hide its own weaknesses by shifting the focus to the internal problems in BN.

"We all know the DAP will contest in Machap but Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has announced it will pave the way for DAP to field a candidate in this by-election on condition the PKR is allowed to contest in Machap in the next general election.

"This showed there is no understanding and cooperation among opposition parties while we in the BN although there are some bickerings, they're resolved amicably," said Khairy, who is also Rembau Umno youth leader.

Khairy said Umno Youth was geared up for the by-election and had even identified specific areas where the movement would focus its attention.

"We will go all out in our campaign to ensure the Barisan retains the seat with a bigger majority," he added.

The seat, previously known as Bukit Sedanan, fell vacant following the death of BN assemblyman Datuk Wira Poh Ah Tiam, 55, on March 15.

In the 2004 general election, Poh, who was also Melaka MCA chairman, beat DAP's Liou Chen Kuang by a 4,562-vote majority. Nomination is on April 3.

Khairy Says BN Fighting 'Wind'

RAUB, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- Umno Youth vice-chief Khairy Jamaluddin has described the straight fight between Barisan Nasional (BN) and an independent candidate in the Batu Talam state by-election as the BN "fighting with wind".

He said that though the independent candidate, Ng Chee Pang, did not have a political background, the BN should not look down on him and be complacent.

"We are like fighting with wind because we do not know where he comes from, and what are his strategies and agenda," he said at a Putera Umno function here Tuesday.

Khairy said Ng who would be celebrating his 22nd birthday this coming Monday, was probably supported by the Opposition, especially DAP.

For the Jan 28 polls, the BN candidate is Abdul Aziz Mat Kiram, 47, who is Raub Umno division secretary.

Get Grassroot Opinion On Utusan-NSTP Merger, Says Khairy

KUALA TERENGGANU, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- Any form of a merger between Kumpulan Utusan Melayu and the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) will have to get the opinion of the grassroots because the two mainstream newspapers have their own history and identity.

Umno Youth Vice Chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the movement had discussed the issue before the party's Supreme Council meeting recently.

"At the last Youth exco meeting, the pros and cons on the proposed merger were raised and because of that, the government, Kumpulan Utusan Melayu and Media Prima have to study the opinion of the grassroots before making a decision," he told reporters when met at a function at Dataran Syahbandar here Saturday.

He said although the merger would be good in strengthening the commercial aspects of the two companies, it could lead to the newspapers, especially Utusan Melayu to lose its identity.
