Umno Youth out to register members as voters

(The Star) SEGAMAT: Umno Youth has launched a campaign to encourage its members to register as voters so that they will be eligible to vote in the next general election.

The wing's deputy chairman, Khairy Jamaluddin, said he was confident of getting at least 70% of the members to register by the end of June.

“In Johor, a total of 30,110 Youth members have yet to register as voters. We will be going to every state and division to get them to do so,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khairy said Barisan National Youth will go to the ground in numbers to rally support for the Machap by-election in Malacca.

“It is a good chance for BN Youth to meet up with multiracial voters. It is different from Batu Talam where the majority of the voters are Malays.

“(In Machap), the voters are 40% Malays, 45% Chinese and 15% Indians. This can give us a clear indication of the support of other races for Barisan Nasional,” he said.

Khairy also announced the appointment of Fuad Tukirin as Johor Umno Youth secretary, replacing the late Abdul Ghauth Abdul Rahman, who died in a road accident during the Batu Talam by-election in January.

Fuad was formerly information chief of the state Youth wing. Khaled Mohamed, who is also Johor Umno Youth chief, takes over Fuad's post as information chief.
